Halloween Adventure was founded in 1981 and has been appearing as pop up stores in PA, NJ, and NY for over 20 years. There are only three permanent locations (two in PA and one in NYC) with over 40 temporary pop-ups that have now expanded to Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
The year 2011 marked Halloween Adventure’s 15th year in the East Village. Manger Tony Bianchi first opened a temporary pop-up store in 1991 and continued to open temporary pop-ups in the East Village until 1996. Some of the spaces we formerly occupied are now Forbidden Planet on East 13th & Broadway and the Fed/Ex Kinkos on Astor Place.
Tony Bianchi’s overwhelming success with Halloween Adventure finally paid off in 1996 when we found a permanent home. This new home was built in what used to be a World Gym at 104 4th Avenue. If you look around the east side of the store you will see remnants of mirrors from the gym behind the grid, as well as original carpeting in the wig department and the flapper section.
Our store expanded in 2004 and thus gave us a second entrance at 808 Broadway. That year also marked the beginning of our website. Our website needed to be unique to our location and so we gave birth to NewYorkCostumes.com.
Because the expansion and the web launch happened at the same time, you will notice that our 2nd entrance boasts a New York Costumes awning. Sometimes people will enter and exit the store through our 1st entrance and then walk around the block to our 2nd entrance thinking they are going to a different store. It’s actually quite funny to witness.
Halloween Adventure today remains the most popular store of its kind in NYC. We retain the bragging rights to having the largest selection of costumes, wigs, masks, props, and décor. Infused with Tony Bianchi’s insanely organized and creative atmosphere we offer the most unique shopping experience in New York City.
